I have a small school network setup with two Mac Mini 10.8 servers. One server runs Open Directory and serves teacher home folders, and another stores student home folders. The problem is that our Mountain Lion clients (2010 iMacs) take much longer to log in than our Snow Leopard clients (2007 iMacs). I timed some logins to provide some detail. All these machines are using wired ethernet.

  • Student network account on 10.6.8 client: 15 seconds
  • Student network account (same as above) on 10.8.4 client: 40 seconds
  • Local account on 10.8.4 client (same as above): 10 seconds

Teacher accounts show roughly the same times as students, so I don't think it's the split services that's the problem. The slowdown started after updating, so it's not the machines themselves. Also, the times above are for a single user. When over 30 kids come into the lab and try to sign on all at once, it could take 2-3 minutes before the machines are logged in.

Any ideas would be welcome.
