Mountain lion server - portable home directory - iphoto

Is there anybody out there who has tried using portable home directories on mountain lion server?

In the previous versions of ox s server there was always a problem with iPhoto... when changing one photo in the entire library, the whole library gets synced. Which is quite annoying with larger libraries..

I imagine that the same would be true.

A work around would be to exclude iPhoto from sync and run CCC to update iPhoto each login/out as that will only update changed photos.

If I'm not mistaken iPhoto keeps all photos in a single database file, I'm not near a computer to check.

But if that is the case that is why the whole library gets synced instead of just changed photos. I don't believe this behavior will change until the way iPhoto handles its photos does.

Allthough I agree dat iPhoto uses a single library file, it still can be opened so it shouldn't be too hard to make a more intelligent syncing mechanism...

maybe the CCC is an option, thanks for sharing that thought

PHD syncing has never handled bundles such as the iPhoto library correctly, so I'm not holding my breath that it will be fixed in ML Server. At a minimum, it seems to resync the entire library whenever something changes; in the worst cases some report data corruption. Some workarounds have been developed, but I agree with Milo that the best approach is to use an alternative sync program such as CCC or ChronoSync to handle the iPhoto library.

That work around is pretty brilliant and I love it (I don't use iPhoto or Aperture, but I'll remember it for when this issue comes up in the future).

Personally, I've found that moving thing OUT of the home folder that are either large or have many nested files speeds up PHD quite a bit. Then I rely on cron'd rsyncs to move those files on regular intervals.

How about excluding the library from PHD and using Dropbox or Sugarsync to sync the library?
