Yes, ive seen the NuCube and the laser cut acrylic monstrosities which allow you to place a mini "on its side". But this is not my question.

What id like to know is how good/bad it is to have the mini truly vertical with the optical slot facing up, the ports down?

Obviously the mini would be supported off the surface so as to have access to the ports and the vent in back. Heat goes up, so it worries me that having it as such would make the back vent inefficient...or is the fan powerful enough?
 
I guess it depends on what you are using it for. If you are are pushing it to the limit for long periods of time I wouldn't advise it. The fan would be powerful enough but it would be extra wear on the fan running fast for the majority of it's life working harder to get that hot air out.
