I'm thinking of using one of my Studio displays in portrait mode but both I have are the standard tilt only stands.
I have a couple of heavy duty vesa mount arms and hear me out...

I'm thinking of making something (from wood) that the bottom of the stand can slide into then mounting that piece of wood (which is now a bracket) to the vesa mount on the the Vesa arm so i can use the monitor in portrait mode.

Making the actual bracket isnt a problem but I'm a little worried if the monitor will be ok taking the weight the 'wrong way up' as the displays have a bit of weight with them?

Do you think the stand will be ok hanging the weight on its side?

It may work. But I think it may be safer and more reliable solution to take it to an apple store and replace the tilt stand with vesa mount.

You will be putting a side load of the full weight of the display - roughly 14 pounds - on a stand with hinge that is intended for vertical use only. The stand design is likely very robust but even so, this is not a good idea. (Nor do I think it would be a very visually attractive solution, but that's just a matter of opinion). Not only that, I'm not sure how you will do this and end up with a balanced mounting on the vest mount arm, the geometry is just not working in your favor.

I agree with @Magnus81, much better that you accept that you need a different mounting arrangement than what you have purchased, and have this modified by Apple. You'll end up with a monitor that is considerably more flexible as well, in case you decide to mount it differently in the future.

If you do take it to Apple and they are able to switch the stand I’d love to know what they charge for the privilege. Given how few of the VESA displays seem to be being delivered at the moment you’d be lucky if they offered to do it without a multiple month wait.

Waiting/paying for a proper VESA mount still seems like a better bet than bodging the stand version though.

If only it was possible to manufacture displays with both stands and VESA support eh? #courage
