ok.. I got a.dmg file on my desktop, duble click on it and it opens up a volume. How do I mount this?? I want it to come up as a Disk ( DVD ICON ) on my desktop.....

To show up as a DVD Icon, you just need to mount it, and then change the icon itself to a DVD Icon. As far as Unix is concerned, it's just another Volume on the computer, doesn't care if it's a DVD, firewire drive, ipod etc...it'll work how it's supposed to.
