Mouse click problem

The mouse on our Mac Mini suddenly quit opening files from the dock -- instead, it just brings up the Finder and shows where the file is located. Another oddity is that clicking on almost any link in any of the browsers (we have Chrome and Firefox in addition to Safari) pops open a new tab. All the mouse-related stuff in System Preferences looks OK.

Any ideas?
