Mouse Cursor changes from "arrow" to "cursor" and won't change back.

My wife has a 13" MBP, and just today the track pad has started doing weird things.

When she's using it the cursor will change from the "pointer" to the "cursor" that the pointer turns into when it's placed in a text input field or over text to highlight.

I don't know what the problem could be; I can't find anything about this. Has anyone experienced this at all? Might there be an easy fix? I'm afraid it's hardware related, and I'm the creek on that one.

I should add that it's running 10.6.6 and it's got a multitouch trackpad (which I think all 13" MBPs have).
