Move archived backup to external drive?

Hello,

I know there is a terminal command method for redirecting iTunes to backups located on an external drive, however I'm wondering if I can just drag and drop an archived backup to an external drive?

I will archive my iOS 10 backup and hope to move it to external drive to free up space on the Mac before upgrading my iPad to iOS 11 beta.

Assuming I need to downgrade can I just copy the iTunes backup to the original location on the Mac or will this not work?
