What is the easiest way to copy files from a Mac that won't start up to an external HDD. Can I use Disk Utility to do it? and if so then how?

I need to move the contents of two user accounts to a USB External. Thanks!

Yeah but I do not have a firewire cable. Every store in town that is open does not carry them and I need to do it tonight if possible. All hardware that is available to me is a MBP, My Book HDD, and MB (won't boot). I need to get the files from the MB to the MBP.

Your external should have come with a firewire cable and a usb 2 cable.

Thats your only option unless you got a hard drive enclosure sitting around or feel like swapping the hard drives between your macbook and macbook pro.

It is only a USB drive. I guess I will wait until I can get a firewire cable.
