I use "spaces" or "launchpad" or whatever it's called now, a lot.

I often open half a dozen applications in one space and then want to move to an empty "space" and open (maximize) an already-open application in that empty space. Instead, OS X slides back to whatever space I opened the app in. Very frustrating when my intent is to work in an application in a less cluttered space.

I DO know how to move applications from space to space — to manually relocate an app to an empty space, but this is not my point.

Is there a setting to always maximize / go to an open app in the CURRENT space you're in? I.e. never have OS X automatically slide to the space in which the application was opened?

BTW... unchecking that option in Preferences does not do what I want.

In Lion, I'm not positive, in Snow Leopard, you can't do what you want. So, in Lion, probably not. I just go with the flow - hit the hot key to show all Spaces, then drag.
