I moved my 120 GB folder "untitled folder 5" from internal SSD to external HDD drive.
I did this while holding the command key. So the big plus (+) did not appear, so it was moving, not copying.
First I got an error message saying "untitled folder 5" already exists on external drive. I choose stop to stop this action.
I made a new folder with the name "untitled folder 6" on the external drive.
Then I moved (hold command key, plus did not appear) my internal untitled folder 5 to external untitled folder 6. (I know, naming folders like this is not practical, I figure out later what to keep or delete or organize, I need space now on my internal drive).
After waiting a long time screen saver kicked in, LED on external hard drive kept flickering for a while and when the LED was no longer flickering I unlocked my Mac. Now the original folder still appears in Finder. Then I checked to see if I did a Move instead of a Copy. Went to the Edit Menu and there it showed Undo Move. So a Move action was performed, but the original data is still on the original place.
Then I compared the folder info. Same amount of files and folders, slightly different amound of bytes (which is logical since different drives have some overhead for certain amounts of files...).
Restarted my Mac, same data still on both drives.
Now what is the safest thing to do?
I there a possibility that MacOS thinks after a while : Hey, I moved that original folder, but it is still there, let's delete it!
When testing some files on the external drive the data can be viewed, so at least the tested files are copied.
Is there an way to do a more thorough compare of the folders?
