iPod touch Movie Sync Problem

I burned several movies in Handbrake under the "iphone" format, and then tried moving them to my 1st gen ipod touch running the 2.2.1 software. Yet, the ipod repeatedly tells me that it cannot sync the following movie files. Not only that, but iTunes doesn't even recognize the movie files! Any ideas on what I can do to get these burned movies on my iPod?
