Saw this the other day, but the story initially disappeared on yahoo.com:

The big disappointment for me was the delay of Top Gun: Maverick. I was really looking forward to its December 2020 release. Now have to wait until next summer. Bummer!

Most of these movies have already been in the can for a while.

The big Hollywood blockbusters are timed to release around certain days: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve/Day to maximize box office revenue.

Many of the second-tier movies won't go head-to-head against a blockbuster, they will go 2-3 weeks before or after. The theatrical release window is really short, something like four weeks for a typical movie.

The big drama movies and Academy Award candidates tend to be on different release schedules. Many of these release in Q4 so they are fresh in the minds of Oscar voters.

Hollywood's film graveyard is spring. That's why they release complete bombs that would typically get destroyed by a blockbuster. The triple-A blockbusters will book most of the screens.
