Movies from Canon digicam and iPhoto

I am having an issue with movies shot with a Canon 870IS and imported to iPhoto. They import as AVI and therefore don't show up on my iPod Touch (3G) or AppleTV (2G).

My work around has been to drag them to the desktop and use an Automator script to convert them to MOV... and iMovie to rotate them if necessary. After importing them back into iPhoto - and losing the date/time info - they sync just fine to both the iPod and the AppleTV.

Is there an easier way? If not, does anyone know of a camera that uses the MOV format for movies?

My Panasonic FZ8 produces .mov movies, but it's a couple of years old so probably no available.

It's not Pro level, but something like a Flip video camera would work well with iPhoto and your devices. I believe the format is .mp4 though, not sure on that one...
