Moving a TM Backup from HD to Ext. SSD

I have a Time Machine backup on my desktop that I want to restore on an external SSD. I tried using the Migration Assistant but it could never find the backup file. I'm running Mavericks on an iMac.
Is there another way to restore this backup to my SSD?
