I currently use a base 2017 Air with 8GB RAM, used mainly for Keynote, Sketch, Affinity Designer, and a bit of Logic. No problems or complaints with this laptop in terms of performance.

I’ve read some complaints about the 16” with regard to screen quality, coil noise, heat, battery, etc. Putting these in perspective, in relation to the Air I have now, would I even notice these? And given the fact that the Air has been adequate for my needs, would the 16” be overkill?

It would seem to be overkill, but maybe you would really appreciate the big screen and great speakers.

Depends really, when it comes to laptops, I don’t think there’s really an overkill or silly purchase. There are several reasons why someone who uses Word, PowerPoint, browsing and watching videos for example may choose the 16 inch over the Air, such as the bigger screen, higher RAM support, better speakers, better display, better cooling, dGPU, etc. It simply depends if you want to spend more money on it.

Another example is, let’s say MiniLED came out next year and only on the 16 inch MacBook Pro higher spec version (at £2600), there are some people who’d want the MiniLED because it looks great when watching movies, or perhaps light gaming. There’s nothing wrong with buying that Pro over the Air just for that feature.

Overall, my point is, if you want the 16 inch, get it. I’m sure the specifications will come in handy some time, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the better features.
