Moving iPhone to new iPhone/number

I'm upgrading my wife's iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4S with a new number. I plan to keep the 3GS for myself and continue to use her old number. If I setup the new iPhone as a restore before wiping the old phone will I run into issues? Does anyone know if I need to activate the new iPhone as a new setup first in order to get the new number before doing the restore? I'm on Rogers in Canada.
