I have read accounts on doing this by moving the mail folder and appropriate plists from Tiger to Leopard but I have also read people advising against this owing to differences between mail app and folders between Tiger and Leopard, so... has anyone done this and had any problems ?

That is what I did. The first time you open Mail in Leopard it just comes up with a progress bar saying updating Mail folders or similar and then once that is done everything worked fine for me.

I would suggest you download all the updates for Leopard before you even open Mail though. Just to be on the safe side. Oh and keep a backup until you are sure it is all working.

hmm, it said it was converting my mail but is now trying to force me to set up an account.

edit: wait, no, got it, the trick is to run mail on the new machine once beforehand otherwise it converts your mail but then doesn't import your accounts and proceeds to try and create its default folders which overwrites your inbox.
