Moving Movies and music from Macbook to ipad

I am thinking of getting an ipad after buying a Macbook Pro last October and loving it..
I want to know if it is possible to transfer movies and music across to an ipad from my Macbook.
I live on a boat and have limited internet access and allowance so would like to know if there is a hard wired way to do this or is the only way through itunes?
