Thread title's a bit of a misnomer, as I'm forced to... I've already lost it. I primarily used this for gaming, and some misc. stuff (e.g. some reference documents and apps saved off line).

On one hand, it was still on ios7, and I didn't want to risk updating it to ios8, and then 9, so I was left with all the games I already had (as opposed to getting new games). The battery was running on 3.5 years under heavy use, and another 6 months of very low usage, so it was going to go in due time anyways. Only reason to get another handheld iOS device is for portable gaming. Problem is, my iCloud was full, and I doubt my game save progress transferred over. OTOH, I quit or suspended many of my ongoing games due to time, forgetfulness, or out of sheer frustration of hitting a wall.

If I get another iOS handheld device, it's gotta be something with a 4.7" or 5.5", so probably a used Iph6/S/+. However, I'm not completely locked out of ios gaming, as I still have my Ipad Air on ios8, and did start/finish some games on there.

Is it even worth it to get a new IpT5 or IpT6 if I can find them new for under $50 and $100 respectively, or should I just cut my losses and get into handheld gaming via Nintendo 3DS, or Switch?

Only you can decide if it's worth it or not for your needs/wants. Same with Nintendo 3DS or Switch, it's all about your preferences.

Also, have to be careful about iOS 11 if you have any 32-bit games since they're not supported.

As this is an online discussion board, I'd still like to hear what others have to say, and if they can offer their experiences.

In that case.. I have an iPod touch (6th gen) and a Nintendo 3DS, I use both of them to play games since there are exclusives on each device. I wouldn't recommend the 5th gen for games since it has an outdated OS and weaker hardware which can struggle at times. The 6th gen iPod touch has short battery life which could be an issue in some cases. I personally find it okay, though I don't have mine on iOS 11 so the battery lasts a bit longer than it would if it was up to date. Of course if you can get one cheap then I suppose the various shortcomings might not really matter.
