Moving part of an iPhoto library..

I want to basically archive my 2006 and 2007 photo's onto an external drive, so it leaves space for my 2008 photo's on my mbp. Is this possible to show iPhoto that part of the files are on the external disk?

I realise that the library index file is relative, but is there any settings I can change to do this?!

You could move them in Finder and replace them with aliases of an identical name.

Hold down the option key when you start iPhoto. You will be prompted to create or choose a library. Create a new library on your external, move your photos there, then switch back to your internal drive (so that it becomes the default). Here's what Apple has to say:
