Hi,

I've equipped my new iMac with a SSD, but I also left the roomier HDD inside for storage purposes.
Since, the SSD isn't big enough for all my files, especially my gigantic music library, I kinda want to split up my data so that the space-consuming files are on the HDD.

The easy way would probably be to just create new folders on the HDD, but that would make me lose the practical aliases in the Finder sidebar, and I couldn't use the convenient structure of the home directory anymore.
I know that it's possible to drag any folders into the sidebar, and to remove the default aliases, but then I'd lose the aesthetic and usefully themed folders (i.e. Music, Movies, Documents, Photos, etc.).

I am also aware of the fact that you can move your entire home directory to another drive, but I am trying to avoid this since I want my SSD to be a little more than just a speedy application launcher.
I'd still like to keep the Applications-, Desktop-, Library-, Public- and Sites-folders on my 240 GB SSD.
I only want to store the Documents-, Movies-, Music-, and Pictures-folders on the mass storage HDD (or there content).

I read about symlinks, but I don't exactly understand how they work and are made? I have a little experience in Terminal though.

Can I move a folder of my home directory - let's say the Music-folder, from my SSD to my HDD, and replace the folder in the home directory with a symlink? How can I accomplish that?
Would iTunes still be able to put music in /users/"my_username"/Music that wouldn't really be located in the home directory on the SSD, but on the HDD!?
Also would opening the folder from the Finder sidebar or the home directory take me to the symlink-ed folder on the HDD?

Can I even move system folders, like these in the home directory, to another drive and delete them from the original one?

Or is there even a simpler way without symlinks that I haven't heard of yet?

Thanks,

Marc
