Moving to a different country: keep my iPhone

I searched but I did not really found anything useful so far:

I will be moving from France, where I own an iPhone 3GS with Orange, to another country, most likely Germany or UK. The thing is I will be cancelling my French line but I would like to keep my iPhone to use it in the country I will be moving to. Obviously, the iPhone is locked and can only work with Orange.
My question is, is there any way to unlock the phone WITHOUT jailbreaking it so I can contract a new line with a German or UK provider?

Contact orange they will unlock it for you for a small fee

Call up Orange and see if they offer an official unlock on their iPhones.
If not sell it before you leave and purchase a factory unlocked iPhone elsewhere or with the new carrier you will use.

Speak to orange they will unlock it for a small fee.

you may just be on to something.... but i would suggest the OP contact Orange first for an unlock. for a fee.

So it's been determined that Orange will unlock your iPhone for a small fee. One question: Is this only for Orange phones or will they unlock an iPhone from any carrier? And if they can't, is it because it's a legal issue or they are just physically unable?
