Moving to France with iPhone 4s

Hi All -

I am relocating for work but would like to take my Verizon iPhone 4s with me. Does anyone have experience with this type of move?

From what I have read so far I will have to unlock the phone. Any help and suggestions on carriers would be much appreciated. This will be my first time out of the country and I will be there a minimum of two years so I am thinking its best to pick up a carrier over there. I will be near Anglet.
