Moving from an 8 year old iMac to a new Mini this weekend. I prefer not to use migration assistant and just do everything clean as I have done in the past. No issues with anything, but, I can't seem to find info on how to move the Apple TV\TV app "library" to a new machine.

My biggest concern is home movies. I have hundreds of them that I access via the TV app. All have been categorized, labeled etc. How do I get that info over to the new machine?

Thanks for any insight.

Typically, the process is similar to how you've probably done it for iTunes/Music. Copy the TV library over. The default location is "~\Movies\TV", then Option-Click the TV app icon to select the library on the new Mac.

However, since this is an older/upgraded Mac that would have had iTunes before everything changed, your media content may still be in the old iTunes directory instead. In that case, you would want to copy over "~/Music/iTunes" (for the media) and "~/Movies/TV" (for the database), and then Option-Click the TV app icon to select the library.

You can see where your media is currently stored by going to TV > Settings > Files.

Thanks for this. Makes sense.

Going to m1 was okay expect home movies
my problem is that TV won't play older med MP4 like Monk, a TV show I ripped from 2008-10 form DVDs
and some home movies from an iTouch 2010.
to remedy this I used VCL or Handbrake to convert mp4 to a current date.

Do you edit home movies or do you have all different types of clips in the tv app.. I.e 30 second clips to longer vids.

I can’t make up my mind how to organise our family videos.. at present they are all in finder and rarely watched

I usually use iMovie to piece together similar footage whether it be vacations, biking, skiing etc. I cut out the garbage then export as a file to an external drive and drag into the TV app, categorize etc. usually watch them through an Apple TV.

Works for me and is pretty easy to find what you are looking for via the ATV app.
