I have an AT&T iPhone 4 on which there is still about a year of contract. For the next 18 months, I shall be spending most of my time in England with occasional trips to the US.

After some research, I think I should be able to unlock the phone and use a UK sim when I'm over there and slip the AT&T one back in when I'm here.

I'd appreciate any advice (a) regarding pitfalls with that scheme, (b) a suitable unlocking tool and (c) ideas about the pros and cons of the various UK carriers.

Thanks in advance.

use the gevey sim to unlock
pitfalls: you are going to still have to pay each month your att contract
Cant help you with the last one.

First thing's first, call up AT&T and explain your situation. Ask them if they can unlock it for international use and that you will continue to pay your contract. You may get lucky.

As for the UK networks, just pick any of the major ones and get a month-to-month SIM only contract, or use a pay as you go SIM. It'd cost you from £10 to £20 a month depending on your needs.
