AudioHijack. You can record as many 30 second previews (which is legal) as you want from iTunes.

But audiohijack is not freeware and it's probably overkill for the OP's use. It's a great piece of software for what it's meant for though. :)

in iTunes, right click on the song you want, go to Get Info > Options (tab) and adjust the start and end times, making sure you check the boxes. Click OK. The song will play like that, but it can be un-configured so it plays all the way through at a later date. Right click on the file, and do Convert to MP3 (or whatever format you want). It will create a new file, to the length you configured.

i am shocked, thank killyp, this is as handy as mp3 splitter, in fact is easier.... i am so surprised that iTunes has this ability... many thank again! :)

Funny how many people don't know about that feature, hopefully it will get built in to iTunes a little better so it is more obvious.

I was surprised when I learned about that too a year or two ago.

I can create new file but when I go to burn it to a CD it wants to burn the whole file not the cut version

right click 'create AAC version' - this makes a MP4 of the song to the length you require.
