Mp4 film clips not showing on iMovie?

Help,
I am trying to download recent film clips to iMovie and they are not being shown in iMovie. previous clips on the same card are showing?, the clips not showing were recorded on a device that records in MP4, is this the problem?.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you use the Import from Camera command?
Have you tried to transcode the .mp4 files to .mov files using the Apple Intermediate Codec via MPEG Streamclip yet?

You can use the same steps outlined here, even though the source is a video DVD. You just open .mp4 files with CMD+O instead of CMD+SHIFT+O.
