.mp4 plays great in QT but when imported into iMovie 09' it freezes

I have a .mp4 file that is 39 minutes long. It plays without any problems in QuickTime. When I import it into iMovie 09' about a minute into it I solid noise emanates that covers up the audio and the video freezes.

Is there anything I can do so that the it plays smoothly in iMovie 09'? I would enjoy making a DVD out of the video.
