MP4 Zune iTunes

Ok, I do have a Zune player that I use at work but haven't loaded anything new on it for years. I use my Apple IPad to purchase music from iTunes and the format I'm seeing is MP4 zune. Is MP4 and MP3 of the same quality and format type? The lion share of music on my old dell desktop is MP3 and a few window file formats. I play all my music thru my Apple iPod and WiFi Bose speaker. The downloads play ok, but which is a better format?
