mp4's won't open

I was given four .mp4 files on a DVD+R. When I click on them I get a message saying "QuickTime Player can't open "xxx". When I click on "Tell Me More" a browser page opens with a list of files Yosemite is supposed to be able to play including .mp4's. Any helpful thoughts?
