Hi guys,

I would like to buy a MBP 16" M1 Max with 64GB of RAM and sell my current one (i9/16GB ram).

But: It would be important to me that the fans are more quite than on my current i9-MBP (I can hear them all the time).

These are the apps that are always open:
- PHPStorm
- Docker
- OBS (+ virtual camera mode)
- Microsoft Teams
- Firefox
- Safari

I also have 2 external displays (1920x1080) attached (MBP is closed).

Do you think (know) that a M1 Max will not fire its fans when running apps like I listed above + using 2 monitors?

Kind regards.

I have the 16" MBP M1 Max with 64GB RAM, and moved up from the 16" i9 MBP with 32GB RAM (with the 8GB 5500.) I'm not seeing any fan noise in regular use with the M1 Max. I do a lot of online sessions (MS Teams, WebEx, Zoom) with tons of apps open, a library of video and audio clips open and cued to present, connected to a VM for demos... completely silent. Video editing, no noise. With the i9 I used to run a turbo boost limiter to keep the fan noise down, while that helped, it was still way too loud so I have been really happy with the M1 Max.

The only time I have heard the fans was when running Cities Skylines, the only computer game I ever play, and even then they were so much quieter than the i9 I had to mute everything to see if indeed the fans were on.

Thank you jyyz,

that sounds really good :)

Do you have displays attached to the MPB?

Yes, I often use the M1 Max connected to a 27" LG Ultrafine 5k. (When connected to the monitor I'm usually in clamshell - I don't have a ton of space on my desk.) I know the i9 well, and it was a noisy beast! One of the big wows for me on the M1 Max is the dead quiet.

I have the Max with 32 and haven’t been able to get the fans to come on at all. I did get all the cores maxed out on a Lightroom export yesterday, but it was only for a few seconds before it was done and ramped back down. The fans may have come on, low, at some point, but I haven’t heard them at all. This thing is SCREAMING fast. Faster than my purpose built, custom desktop.
