Am I better of getting a 2018 base MRTR2LL/A or a M1 base MGNR3LL/A for a home media server that I will direct connect to my router? The difference in price is about $130. Main uses will be for Plex server/media storage and Channels App. Plex will be streaming 4K movies at times. I have a Samsung SD drive that I connect to either for storage.

I am fine with whatever route and just want to make sure I by whatever is going to have better performance and future proof. The newer M1 is about $130 more if I go the refurbished route.

Thanks for the help!

Get this one before it's gone. Go with M1 instead of Intel, it'll get supported for a bit unlike Intel which will probably lose support in a couple years.
M1 Mini Refurbished
Thanks - that is the one I was looking at. I can get for $530 with military discount. I really don’t need the 512gb/16mb memory one for $836 - right? My Samsung SD drive should be fine?

I have been using my 2012 iMac as mostly my media server. It is connected to wifi, which I think is causing some streaming issues. I just hooked up a Moca 2.5 connection and now it is consistently about 1gb down and 50 up.

Would I still be better of going with the M1 and hooking directly into my router and will be able to handle 4K movies, etc better? I can always return my Moca and then the Mac mini is really just about a $300 plus upgrade.

Thanks for the help.

For media streaming I don't see an 8GB model would be an issue. I have all my media and other files connected to my Mini on external drives.
I'm a little out of the loop for streaming but I would imagine the 4K is maxing the bandwidth on your router.
