MS Excel 2008 is SLOW when typing non-latin characters

Usually Excel 2008 is OK, but as soon as I type something using a non-latin character, e.g. an umlaut or something in Russian, it slows to a crawl. This just began recently. Any ideas as to what might be causing it and how I could make Excel usable again?
