MS Exchange 2007 SLOW in Macmail

Is it just the nature of the beast that my corporate mail via ms exchange is so slow? I use the same settings on my iPhone and iPad and iOS mail is fast, on OSX it is dreadful.

Any work arounds or should I just run Outlook for Mac?

Outlook isn't any better, in fact it's worse...I bought 3 copies but don't use it at all. I opted for Thunderbird which I've been using for years now without issues. Apple / Macmail just isn't good enough, despite all the ML promises. IOS mail is fast, and always has been.
