MS wireless laser keyboard 6000 v2

This wireless keyboard is giving me problems (prob bc its MS). Under the wireless tab my connection is 'Low' even though the wireless reciever is about 1.5 ft away from my keyboard. I do not notice too much of a typing problem even with the 'Low' wireless connection. Its sitting on my Ikea desk thats wood on the top but metal legs/stand. But here comes the troubling part - i made a new account for someone to use for a few days and the 'hot keys' on the keyboard do not work under the new account ie: volume. Another strange thing is the wireless tab for the keyboard shows a 'High' wireless signal. I did switch accounts one after another checking the wireless signal and volume hot keys and of course on my account keyboard hotkeys work + low signal, on the new account volume hot keys do not work + high wireless signal. I'm not a rocket scientist but this doesn't seem right. I really prefer this keyboard apposed to Apple's wireless because its so much easier to type on, Apple's wireless keyboard seems very 'clickly' and hard to type on - almost like a workout for my hands and fingers. So I'm trying to get to the bottom of this keyboard issue, if anyone out there has this keyboard, please help me out!
