I'm using OS 10.3.9 and Office v.X. For some reason, when I email attached word documents, sometimes they end up with a data file extension and pc recipients can't open it. My Word preferences are set to save files as Word documents.

Anyone know why this is happening?

What program are you using to do the emailing? If it's Apple's Mail, then you might want to make sure the "Send Windows friendly attachments" button is ticked in the preferences.

Try checking the box in the Finder preferences advanced tab that says "show all file extensions."

Yeah, good thinking GodBless. Windows needs the extension to actually be written down for it. I'm pretty sure that's all the "Send Windows friendly attachment" preference does anyway.

To support the point made by the posters above, Windows users need the .doc file extension to properly associate a file with M$ Word. Setting a file to a Word document does not in and of itself append the proper extension because MacOS X does not need it.
