I have a MBP 2.4ghz, and Word 2004 installed (part of the Office suite), and I have a weird issue that goes on. Word will remember every other preference and toolbar setting, but "forgets" the "Background Repagination" option from the Preferences menu. I have documents open in Normal view (instead of page layout), and it never remembers that I checked this option (it is always unchecked). If I re-check it, it will stay on for the duration of my session. As soon as I close out of Word, however, it forgets that option the next time I open it.
I have now gone through four interactions with MS support on this issue. After all the normal things (reinstalls, etc.), they kicked it up to their developers and ran futher tests. They believe that the issue is a system problem regarding power management. They claim that Word turns off repagination when a laptop is running on battery power to conserve power. Even though I am running my MBP while on the AC adapter (and the power menu option confirms this, listing the power source correctly as my AC adapter, not battery), they believe that I may need to reinstall the system software or some parts of it. (The computer came with 10.4.9 installed, and I have since upgraded to 10.4.10. The problem was present under both OS versions.) The MS techie things that my laptop is not using the power settings correctly, e.g. thinking it is running off the battery when it is in fact running of the AC adapter.
This proposed "solution" sounds a bit fishy to me, and I'd rather not go through messing with the OS when everything else tells me my computer is properly managing power (like I said, it reports correctly whether power is from the AC or from the battery). Furthermore, using Terminal, I checked the processor speed, and it correctly reports 2.4ghzs. I don't notice any slowdowns, and Quake 4 always seems to run well at the high settings.
Does anyone out there have experience with this, or a better way of determining if my MBP is using the proper power configurations, etc? Or any other ideas as to why Word won't remember the repagination option?
