MS Word - Numbering Problem

HI all.

When I have a numbered list (I. , a. , i, etc.) i'm not able to backspace material into the list. Whatever I'm backspacing will NOT backspace up into the list. It stays put on the line despite my hitting the delete key.

Is there a setting I need to turn on/off?
