msn messenger and iChat compatible?

I just got my new iMac-I love it. My Dad uses MSN instant messaging, and I would like to chat when he comes online. Can I use iChat and have him still use his MSN? I did a search on the forums, and got some good info, but nothing seemed to address this specifically. I am interested in text only for now (no video or audio).

iChat is only for use with AOL Instant Messenger. MSN will not work with iChat.

You and your Dad can both get a free AIM account at aol.com if you want to use iChat.

Unfortunately as the other psoter pointed out iChat doesn't support MSN, however you can download the freeware messenger client, Adium that is compatible with most of the major protocols including MSN.
