So there's this age-old bug that prevents users of MSN Messenger from getting to their hotmail in 8.0.1. The app will still inform you if incoming email, but when you click on the button, it's supposed to load a webpage with your inbox, but it's sending some deprecated link and the md5auth fails.

So fail - been like that for a year.

And yes, I know there are alternative MSN clients, such as adium, but do they link to the hotmail email?

Anyway, my main question is why is MSN messenger being updated (recent update for Lion), when version 8 is not?

Not as far as I know. There might be an Adium Xtra that adds this functionality, though.

Microsoft feels that version 8 isn't worth updating, apparently.

Thanks.

I just realised I meant to add "7" after it, but I guess you got the idea. MSN Messenger 7 was updated, but MSN Messenger 8 was not.
