Well if it's happening to your friend, it might be MSN. Give it a day and see what happens.

Thanks guys. Help is much appreciated but I think my modem has packed in. after all it is 7 years old and its used 24/7 heavily so i cant blame it. getting a new one fromm Virgin Media in next 5 working days will post an update and tell you guys if that works.
