Hi guys, i am a recent convert so please bear with me.

I downloaded the most recent update of msn messenger and now whenever i open it, a msn icon (hd icon) shows up on my desktop. Is this normal? Because none of my other programs does this? MSN works fine btw.

Thanks!
Ed

drag the icon to the apps folder in the finder ,

I've tried doing that but it just creates a shortcut in the apps folder and the msn icon is still on my desktop. :( Also note, I can "eject" the icon in finder and it goes away.. but when i open msn again it comes back to my desktop.

Have you tried Adium? messenger is a piece of junk - leaving files all over the place. Adium will let you connect to MSN no problem.

That means you're launching a disk image, not the program itself. Copy the MSN program inside that disk image to your Applications folder and then eject the disk image and trash it. That's how a lot of software is distributed in OS X.
