MTU setting on router

Can anyone tell me what MTU my router should be set to? I am using a Netgear DG843G router and connect with a white 2006 24" iMac. My ISP told me to set it to 1500 but I have also heard that this only is the case for windows pcs and that macs are different. Also that routers are different too.
