MUJI International Design Competition

The theme is “SUMI”.

The objective is not to design something that is placed in the middle of the room, but towards the edges, not at the centre and not directly around the centre; you should look for somewhere that evades the eye, send us an object designed for that place, and name it as you wish.

We are not asking for any particular genre, it could be anything from furniture, stationery and office equipment, to everyday items.

[Abstract]

I used to love Muji. I even started a thread about it here around a year ago. However, I went to half a dozen Muji stores in Taiwan and Hong Kong over the past 6 months, and their clothing really is boring now. Their clothing used to be ok..........minimalist (and dry, boring), but still ok and wearable, especially their jackets, but now it's just boring and NOT ok. Also, I'm apparently an XL at Muji (I'm 176 cm and 75kg, or 5'10" and 165 lbs) and their shoes don't fit me because my feet are too big (a US 10, or around Euro 43).

Their furniture is decent looking but is made from cheap materials (although recycled) and they charge too much for what you get. Sometimes the prices are ok, but it really depends on what you get.

Anyway, I already own something perfect for the corner of a room. Obviously I can't submit it, and I probably couldn't tell them that my concept is based on something I bought from IKEA.
