Whenever I try to start up my mac book pro I get coloured lines going down the screen. It then just shows me a large image of the power button with the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button" I then do this and the same happens again and I go no further. Please any ideas on how to fix this?

Sorry to hear this but it sounds like there's a problem on the logic board itself otherwise you wouldn't be greeted with the system crash image, you've seen. I would seek aftercare assistant from Apple if I were you.
