Multi-tasking: Are ALL of those apps really running?

When I double tap the home button, it pulls up the task bar at the bottom, and it shows all the recent apps I've opened, not just the last 4. Are all of those apps technically still running and sucking up battery?

Ummm... no.

A couple instances of apps have been found to have bad behavior (Words with Friends is one I've read about) but generally speaking the apps are just parked in a suspended state and should not consume any resources.
