Apart from the option of using a computer instead, do you now of any multimedia device available in the market nowadays that can:
  • Record analog video to an external hard disk plugged in the device.
  • Play DVD images stored in an external hard disk (I mean DVD backups from my collection).
  • Great compatibility for playing audio/video files with many codecs.
 
That's only audio. I meant audio and video. I guess one of those fanless miniPCs with Linux, an analog video capture dongle, and VLC player installed would be my best bet. The time for dedicated multimedia recorders+players sets seems to be gone forever.
