Hi;

I work in a school and have been given a number of iPad Min 1's. I would like to set these up as shared devices using a multi management tool but so aS these iPads are limited to IOS 9 I will have to use Apple Configurator.

I have found several guides on using it but cannot find the answer to this question.

All of these iPads have been reset so need to be setup from new. I have requested an extra school email address that I will use but I am not sure of the process I need to follow.

Before setting all of them up in Apple Configurator do I need to set one of the up i.e. go through the iPad setup process allocating an Apple ID and connecting to WiFi etc before then using configurator?

I do't want to have to setup all 30 manually :-(

Any help would be great.

I do not believe Apple Configurator will work with older iOS 9.3.5 devices.
iPads in a shared environment ( school / enterprise ) should each have their own unique AppleID. For schools the best bet would be to use a Managed AppleID. They offer many benefits, but a good one is the 200GB of storage.

Contact Apple, find your local Apple Account Executive or Engineer and setup a meeting. They can point you in the proper direction. Should be something like this:

  1. Visit https://school.apple.com and create an account
  2. Enroll in DEP ( for device management and the root level )
  3. Enroll in VPP ( for volume app purchases, discounts, distribution and licensing )
  4. Enroll in Apple Store for Education Institution ( not the same as Apple Education Store - your account exec can be the go between if for this if your purchases are few and far between ).
  5. Pick an MDM ( Mobile Device Management ) system and get control of your devices: for schools Mosyle is a great one.
  6. Good luck!!
PS. I currently manage over 7500 iPads ( been doing it for 10 years or so ).
