I can't believe this hasn't been more widely noticed, but even trying on a fresh install in a VM this bug seems to exist.
Search for any text that is found in a PDF document in preview, clear search field, and search again.
On second search, the thumbnails search list stops showing search context, only page numbers. And selecting text either becomes impossible, or only works on on even pages after cancelling search!
These have been bugs throughout the Catalina beta cycle and into release for me, and do not seem to be document dependent?
I reported the first part back in September, but no reply or acknowledgement.
